Door decoration contest

We decorated our door this week because we're having a school wide contest. To win the kids do a lot & not the teachers doing a lot to make it look so good. Our door says "Chill out with a good book" and we made snow people reading books and we made snowflakes to go around the door!

Health

In health we have learned that there are 2 kinds of germs. One of them is bacteria and the other one is virus. We also learned that some diseases are not infectious. Colds and the flu can spread cancer and heart disease can not spread. In are class everybody has had a cold. Nobody has had heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. We also learned how to explain disease. We cut the words in half like this, dis-ease. Dis means not and ease means comfortable if you put those words together it means that disease means not comfortable illness.

Read Aloud

We just finished the book "Small Steps" by Peg Kehret.  It was about how she had polio when she was twelve. She started learning to walk again. Each day she took six steps and then did seven, eight and nine and soon she was walking! She showed Dr. Bevis she could walk and he was very proud. Then she went home after seven months.

Biomes

We made biomes. We went to a website by using Qrafter and took a picture of one of the QR codes. Some options of some biomes were Forest, tundra, aquatic, desert and grassland. We made trioramas by taking a piece of construction paper and folding it into a triangle shape.  Then we looked up information about our biomes on the IPad's. Then we cut out animals from construction paper and made our biomes on the triangle.

Poetry Share!

Dear Parents,
Today, we had a poetry share since we have studied poems for so long. We made poetry books. At the poetry share, we all lined up in line order at the side of the room. Some kids volunteered to explain what type of poem is which. Then we all shared 2 poems, one at a time. There were a lot of different themes. After we all shared a couple poems, we went back to our tables. All the parents and the kids looked at other poetry books and left comments. I loved doing the poetry share!

Music

Dear Parents,
Last week we saw these two college students their names were Blaire and Rachel. Last Saturday they preformed a show called Pinocchio. They were both in the show. We got tickets on Friday. In a part of the show the two girls told us to act like a old person and other things. In a part of the show the two girls made some people freeze in front of the classes, and the two girls asked what the three kids looked like to the classes. It was a blast I hope they do it again next year because it was so much fun!

It has been incredibly fun. We have this thing called a math book that's were all our lessons are for us to do the math in for example there's: 15-1 which is in the right top hand corner one more thing for a example in the top left hand corner that is the front of the cover of my class math book. It has been a fun time doing math with Mrs. Baker she rocks.

Poetry

Dear Parents,
Last week we started poetry in writing. We have learned about Haikus and we have also started learning about Tankas. Today we started acrostic. Only some people  got to do acrostic and some people did not get to start acrostic. A haiku is a poem that has a pattern of 5, 7, 5. A tanka is two haikus squashed together! An acrostic poem is where you make a word by stacking the letters on top of each other. Then you connect a phrase to each letter in the word. The phrase has to do something with the original word. Each person picked a theme to write all their poems on. Then we came up with topics for that theme to write individual poems with. My name is Allison and my theme is dreams. Some topics for that theme are good dreams, nightmares, and crazy dreams. My name is Sydnie and my theme is the Zoo. Some topics I have for my theme are giraffes and gorillas. Everybody will put their poems together to make a poetry book. So then everybody will have their own poetry book with all their poems in it. My name is Kate and my theme is summer, and some topics I have for my theme are popsicles and the beach. But that is what we have been doing in writing!

The things we get our money for is bonuses, homework, jobs ( classroom jobs), and other things.

Bethel Park

Dear Parents, here are some pictures from our field trip to bethel park!

Our trip to Bethel Park started with a long walk!>
<Most of the things people got on their faces were animals or at least facial hair.......Me, sydnie got bushy eyebrows, sideburns, mustache, and a beard. Me, Allison, decided to look like a tiger.

The field trip was split into stations. One was fishing. Here is a pic of Merrik with a fish that he caught.

<Another station had Bochi ball and horse shoes. This is Kate playing a game of horse shoes in action.

This is the arts and crafts station. At one picnic table, you could make visors. Here they are making bracelets

Here is a snapshot of Natalie hoola-hooping at a games station.

Here is a picture of our class playing " Over and Under ". We are
playing this at a relay station.

Making Ecosystems!

Dear Parents,
This week we made our ecosystems. We have to use three bottles to make one ecosystem.  Apparently all the fish died on the first day so we had to get new one but when the ecosystem came to my table the fish bobbed at the top. Next day they both died again. We haven't named the fish yet. The bottom things in the ecosystem are a dead fish, elodea, snails, and gravel. At the top of the ecosystem there was dead leaves, roly poly's, worms, grass seeds, gravel, soil, and fabric. The Ecosystems  were a fun project!!!!!!!

Making Board Games!

Dear Parents,
This week we have started to create game boards. We also created instructions, and game pieces. To create the boards we had to have two people making the board also we had to plan the board game on a piece of notebook paper. After Mrs. Baker checked our plan, we started making the actual game on a BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG piece of colored paper. We worked on our game boards for at least two days. Mrs. Baker said the partners had to decide who got to take the game board home so that one person could take the game home and someone could take the planning sheet home. Making board games is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much fun!

Today's Meet!

Dear Parents,
A couple weeks ago, the third grade started something called Today's Meet! We do today's meet in the morning when we have the chance. Mrs. Baker asks a question every day and we answer it. Mrs. Baker asks the question in a "room."  A room is where we answer questions and talk about a certain subject. Some examples are LBscience or FinalchapterSG. You have to type todaysmeet.com/ before you type the name of the room. We can't do words like hey girl or what's up. But we can ask our friends things like who is your favorite character or what is your favorite part. And of course, we have to answer the question Mrs. Baker asks ourselves. It is a fun way to learn and talk about science or reading or math....it is a good idea!

Earth day

Dear Parents,
This week we planted our own trees. We all had seeds to plant the flowers. The flowers did not need to be watered because the rain. We planted the trees in front of the building. We had them in the front of the school. Each person had there own little section. I wonder what type of flowers we planted? I also wonder if we all planted the same type of flowers or did we plant the same type of flowers. We all were probably at least two inches apart. It was a fun thing to do espically because it was a beautiful day outside.

Sisters Grimm Update!

Dear Parents,
Since we haven't talked about reading/read aloud lately, Sydnie decided that we could give you an update on "The Sisters Grimm." The Sisters Grimm is a very long, long book. You can fill maybe 2 pages and a half of important parts for one chapter! The girls have found out that their granny is the real one, that mythical creatures are real, and meet a new character named Puck. Puck can control all of the pixies and calls himself "evil". There is a guy named Mayor Charming he basically is rich or some people call him Prince Charming. A giant steals Granny and Mr. Canas and ran off.....also there's this guy named jack from jack and the bean stalk. The girls found jack in prison he said mayor charming did it so the girls came up with a plan to help jack escape, because he said he would help the girls by saving mr.canis and granny. Then later on in the book the girls found out jack really wanted to kill the girls because he is a ever after and most ever afters don't want the grimms to die so they can be free. But that is what we are reading in Read Aloud!

Time Tests!

Dear Parents,
We have never blogged about time tests so this is our chance to do it. At the beginning of the year, we did time tests with addition, and subtraction. Now that we've learned, we do tests with multiplication. Our goal is to finish 100 problems (one time test) under 5 minutes by the end of the year.  We are now doing the time tests in 7 minutes to do the problems. We are getting closer to 5. After each time test we check it. There are 10 rows with 10 problems in each row. Mrs. Baker will call on someone to read the answers in their row one at a time. If they got the problem wrong, Mrs. Baker will correct it. If they got it right and you got the same answer, then you got the question right. After checking, we all record our scores on a paper that shows our score throughout the year. We always do time tests on Tuesday because Mrs. Baker calls it Time Test Tuesday. Now that, is an awesome name!

Mill Creek Assembly!

Dear Parents,
Last week 3-5th graders went to a assembly. A group called "Talking Horse Productions" came to our school to put on a play. There was around 13 scenes in the whole entire play. Each scene was about 2 minutes long and about a different subject. Each scene in the play had a picture that was themed around the scene that was on a cloth from a brown basket. The actors all wore a costume for each scene. My favorite scene was when they were looking for a treasure and couldn't find it...I am Allison by the way. I'm Sydnie and my favorite scene was when they were trying to make flowers stand up but it wouldn't so one of these girls used a box to make the flowers stand up by making holes in the box and she did it. Talking Horse Productions are amazing at putting on plays! Thank You Talking Horse Productions if you are reading this!

Chilli the amazing fish

Dear Parents,
At the beginning of the year, Elliea had a fish and she brought it to be a class pet. (Elliea is the one in the far left top corner in the picture.) We had 3 fish before but 2 died, Chilli was a survivor. The other two were Cola and Goldmine. Since Chilli knows how the other fish died he is staying away from the filter....our class is trying to get more fish for Chilli because he is lonely. A decoration in Chilli's tank has a sign that say's " NO FISHING!". That is true because "you shouldn't kill your class pet....." Chilli is a amazing fish he keeps us company, also there's a girl named Mia and she cleans the tank and does other things to help chilli! Go Chilli!

Opinion Writing Maps!

Dear Parents,
This week we have been doing opinion writing maps. We write down our opinion, 3 reasons to support it, and at least a couple of examples/facts to support our 3 reasons. It's about something you want to change about the world, a problem at school, and many other different topics. When you are done making 3 opinion writing maps, you can write it up in your writers notebook, and then you type it up on the computer. After you write your 3 reasons and your 3 facts/examples you write the same opinion/statement but in a stronger way. After you do 3 opinion writing maps you go to the back table (where mrs.baker is waiting for you) to discuss what opinion writing map you want to write in your writers notebook and type. That's what we have been doing in writing this week!

Dear Parents,
This week we have been working on Weather PowerPoints. A weather PowerPoint is info about rain, storms and etc. We get all the information from a weather journal/book. In our weather journals we write down the temperature, humidity, precipitation, and wind speed everyday. Like yesterday it was 49 degrees. Each group got to do a section from a book called "Clouds, win and Storms". One person from the group got a laptop and logged in with their number and password. We're not quite finished yet. It was fun/cool and awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...........wicked.........!!!!!!

Jumping with Rope!

Dear Parents,

Today in P.E We were jumpin like crazy!!! It was the second day of our jumprope unit. We learned about partner jumping and long rope jumping. We watched a video that reviewed what we learned...and we watched a video about partner jumping and long rope jumping. Our favorite was the long rope jumping. Some people "free jumped" while others watched the review video. The video was about how to jump with two or more people. The video taught people how to cross jump rope and other skills. If you have a jump rope at home you should pack it up to go on trips. I don't really have a jump rope because my dad ran over it with his car. You should really.... STAY ACTIVE!!!!!!!!!

Science + Fun = Awesome

Dear Parents,
Today we watched Mrs. B make a thermometer. The things that Mrs. Baker used was rubbing alcohol,  modeling clay, a water bottle, red dye, water, a bowl with hot water in it and a straw. You can make it because you got a letter with the instructions on it so you can make it at home. We couldn't make them at school because it was at the end of the day. We also couldn't make them because there was hot water. You should try it at home but when you pour the hot water in the bowl it only works 1 time I hope you make it at home.🌺

Fraction Strips

Dear Parents,
Today in math, we started learning about fractions with the help of fraction strips! Each person got one bag of fraction strips. (1 whole, 2 halves, 3 thirds, 4 fourths, 5 fifths, 6 sixths, 8 eighths, 10 tenths, & 12 twelves.) Some people used them for math but others didn't. With the fraction strips, we found out that one half was equal to two fourths, or that two halves was equal to three thirds. (In the picture below.) To make a whole you have to have the same number as the numerator and the denominator for example ( 8/8 =1 whole.) The numerator is the top number and represents the part that is shaded or taken away, while the denominator is the bottom number, which represents the whole. Fraction strips were sort of hard..... But you get used to it!

Music Class

Dear Parents,
Today in music class, we learned about Irish dancing! (Riverdances)! We watched a video about Irish dancing. Then she gave us a chance to try it ourselves. There are Irish dance lessons on YouTube if you would like to learn. Also to be a Irish dancer you have to wear a special type of tap shoes, but you don't have to be Irish. Because there is some Irish dancers that are from America that do it. You could be a girl or a boy you can still be a Irish dancer. When we got the chance to riverdance, it was pretty hard! (They make it look EASY!) I think it probably takes a year to learn Irish dancing (because they are super fast!) If you are up for a challenge, try Irish step dancing!

Weather Vane!

Dear Parents,
Today we made a science project called a weather vane. It shows where the wind is coming from. ( north, east, south, & west.) When the wind blows into one of the cups, the weather vane will spin around and the arrow will face where the wind is coming from. We used three plastic cups, a pencil without an eraser, a pin, a straw, a bead, a paper arrow, and a paper plate. You can just hold it anywhere outside, and when it's windy, it will show you what direction the wind is coming from! Some people went to the back of the room to make there's and others did it at their table.

Today in our specials class we went to library!! It was AWESOME! Two weeks ago we started are non-fiction power point. Since then we have made a lot of progress. First we had to get a bunch of pictures so we could put them on our slides! Second we had to find info on Google Chrome. Then we wrote the info on a paper. Today's lesson we started our power point and typed the info on our new slides. There were so many topics to pick from. Here are some of the topics our class picked.... Dolphins, blue whales, China, turtles, bobcats and California! We hope we finish them in time to show our parents!
